History of Coffee:
According the Java Jo'z Website; "Exactly where and when
coffee was first cultivated is not know, but some authorities believe that it was first grown in Arabia near the Red Sea about AD675."
Some accounts suggest that coffee was born in
Ethiopia, but most claim it got its start in Arabia. Its
popularity quickly spread through Europe. The Arabians
were so protective of their coffee plants that it was a crime
punishable by death for a European to have a plant in his
possession, however the Dutch managed to get a hold of a tree
and the French eventually smuggled a single cutting to Latin
America in the early 1700s which was reportedly responsible for
the great coffee plantations there.
Today, coffee is a major industry employing millions
of people and ranks second to petroleum in dollars traded worldwide.
Coffee is the world's most popular beverage, with half a
trillion cups consumed each year.
Sales of premium specialty coffees in the United States have
skyrocketed in the past 10 years and are steadily increasing.
