GotToGet! Poker
Strategy offers tips for all levels of play and a
special section dealing with online poker.
Poker is a skill game. The 'luck of
the draw' certainly comes into play, but over time,
you'll average the same number of winning hands as
any other player. The key is to play the cards that
you're dealt better than the other guy plays his.
Minimize the size of your loss when the cards go
against you, maximize the size of your win when the
cards go in your favor, and fold, fold, fold when
you're dealt cards you shouldn't be playing!
To skip the preamble and start
learning now, click on Beginner, Advanced or
Online in the left column.
Beginner and
Advanced also apply to online poker. The online
section is simply an overview of the minor
differences in strategy when playing online,
rather than in a bricks and mortar poker room.
You not only have to beat your
opponent in poker; unless you're playing at someone's
kitchen table, you have to beat the house rake as
well. The rake is what the house takes from each
winning pot and is generally 5% of the the pot up to
a maximum of $3 (actual rake varies depending on the
number of players at the table and the size of the
table stakes).
